From Algae to Artifact:

A Hands-On Biomaterial Workshop @SF Design Week 2025

Can you imaging a future where everyday objects could be plastics-free?

This workshop was a continuation of Bioform , where we explored how algae-based biomaterials could be used in everyday consumables—like home decorations, organizers, or even tiny pockets we carry around.

Instead of keeping this work within the academic bubble, We wanted to share it with the design community and see how others might engage with these materials. So we prepared a variety of bioplastics and biofoams, all made by hand, and invited the public to join the workshop.

By the end, participants had crafted their own small artifacts—like bags or sunglasses holders—that pushed the possibilities of what this material could do.
